In an effort to improve one’s writing skills, one would usually take up writing classes or find ways to learn writing even all by one’s lonesome.

Writing Orientation

Some have the luxury of having been schooled in writing with courses on Journalism and the like. Good for them, they knew at the onset that they want such line of work in the future. Unfortunately for some of these, they may find out later on that this is not actually the kind of work they prefer.

There are also some - who may not have undergone the formal training in writing - but have the passion to write. Such individuals would love to write. These individuals can be considered ‘writers by heart.’ With their love for writing, they have the greatest potential to excel.

Each may have certain advantages and disadvantages over the other - the schooled writer will have the edge in terms of the knowledge gained, while the writer by heart will have its enthusiasm as his edge. In most cases though, it is the one who is personally motivated - in this case, the writer by heart - who is likely to succeed.

A Writer’s Success

A formal schooling on writing - and the passion to write is the best combination. But while some may not have the luxury of having been schooled, this is not at all a hindrance.

The important thing in writing - aside from form - is the content. Content gives value to your writing. Form polishes it.

Both form and content is necessary for your writing to be successful. Form engages your readers to continue on. Content provides the information sought upon by the readers.

Books on Writing

I have some books on writing that I constantly refer to. One is the Right Way to Write Reports by Steve Gravett. Check it at www.right-way.co.uk.

Another book is A Writer’s Guide to Nonfiction by Elizabeth Lyon. Elizabeth Lyon is also the author of Nonfiction Book Proposals Anybody can Write. Check out www.elizabethlyon.com.

Do you love writing? Do you like to be a freelance writer? Or perhaps - do you currently have writing as your profession?

If you are like me, I don’t have a formal training on writing. I graduated college with an engineering course. I did want to take up long distance learning courses about writing. There is one on Freelance Writing, Short Story Writing and Journalism. I wasn’t able to pursue it though - perhaps in the future. What I was able to take up though was Advanced Management. This is the Penn Foster School.

Learning the Art of Writing by Yourself

What I did was buy books about writing - creative writing and how to make reports - and continued reading about it. There are a lot of tips you can learn about such books. You can check what your tone and what your writing style is. You will also learn some general guidelines on how you should go about your writing to fit your audience.

The Passion to Write

What is most important about writing however is that you should have the passion for it. You must love to write - and you must want to communicate to others in this form.

I always had the passion about writing - and in fact I won 1 award during my elementary years - I just came in second though. The topic then was ‘Quo Vadis Filipinas?’. I was proud of what I achieved then - and still am very proud of it now.

A Christian Writing Community

If you want to practice writing - you may want to visit www.faithwriters.com. You can sign up for free and you can post your articles.

Every person has a story to tell, so they say. Yet not everybody is able to tell their version as efficiently as another. But with practice, one will be able to develop their ability to write.

Each one though has his and her own style and tone of writing. It is unique to each of us - all because of the difference of our experiences, knowledge, wisdom and attitude. One must try to see and learn his own style and polish it more.

What is most important though is that one has the passion for writing. Without it, it would be difficult to write creatively. Without passion, you will not be focused enough to produce a quality work.

I love to write. I know I still have a lot to learn - and so I will continue to practice my writing. I’d continue to read books and continue to enrich my knowledge.
